Free Madden Tips – A Look at Passing Concepts Part 3 – Wheel Out

Here is another free tip from Madden Guides:
Our last Madden Tips passing concept we want to take a look at in out 3 part series is one that does an outstanding job at attacking Cover 2 and Cover 3 coverages. For this passing concept to work the quarterback needs to have enough time to wait for the receiver running the wheel out passing concept can get open down the field.
The play we use from the Saints playbook to show case how effective the Wheel Out can be against Cover 3 coverage is the Gun Spread Y-Slot. The name of the play is Flanker Dig. Observe on the left side, the left slot receiver runs a wheel route, while the split end runs post. This route combination is also known as Wheel Post. The idea of this concept against Cover 3 coverage is to get the right cornerback to come inside to cover the split end, leaving the left slot receiver open once he breaks deep down the left side line.
Something we like to do from time to time is smart route the split ends post route so he breaks towards the middle quicker so that that right cornerbacks comes inside faster.
Once the ball is snapped, the left receiver goes towards the flat, while the split end takes an inside release. Notice the right cornerback at this point is still playing outside.
Once the split end breaks inside, the right cornerback goes with him.
While this is gong on, the left slot receiver is breaking down the sideline on his wheel route. Before making the throw to him, we have to wait for him clear the underneath coverage In this case, there is a defender playing the left flat area.
After the left slot receiver clears the left flat defender, we then make the throw to him. If there were a defender playing the curl/ flat (buzz zone), we would need to wait for the left slot receiver to clear him before making the throw. Keep in mind if a defender does play the curl/flat, there will be smaller passing window to throw to the left slot receiver. When making the throw, we want to throw a bullet pass towards the left sideline by pressing hard right on the left stick.
We make catch as the right cornerback tries to make up ground.
